Your account's phone numbers are managed under Numbers & Routing. Numbers can ring extensions directly, or feed call routing like auto-attendants and business hours.
Assigning numbers
Every extension has its own directly-assigned number. This matters for emergency calling: a 911 call routes to the correct emergency center for that extension's registered address. See Emergency calling (E911).
Choosing your caller ID
If you have more than one number, you can choose which one you place calls and send texts from — your "Calling as" number in the browser phone. Your contacts see that number as the caller ID.
911 always uses your emergency number
No matter which caller ID you pick for normal calls, a call to 911 always goes out with the extension's own assigned emergency number, so responders reach the right location. You cannot override this — it's a safety guarantee.
Routing an inbound number
An inbound number doesn't have to ring a single extension. You can point it at any routing building block, and chain them together:
- A time-based schedule (open vs closed)
- An auto-attendant (press-1 menu)
- A ring group or call queue
- An announcement or voicemail
The call-flow map shows exactly how each number flows.
